In recognition and appreciation of Dr. Roman J. Foster, independent filmmaker and historical researcher, on his production and well documented film “The Diggers.” The film took 8 years of research and numerous trips to Panama and the West Indies to locate archives and historical data. As he stated at the time, “The history of these men has failed to receive its place in the annals of American and world history.” While we refer to our grandparents as the “Silvermen” in our stories, they were better known as the “Diggers.” Roman Foster’s film is a well-documented attempt at depicting the struggles of these men and setting the record straight. It was also a very timely project as it allowed surviving “Diggers” to die with dignity and the recognition, which they sought. In the film, six of the survivors are interviewed: John W. Bowen (98 years at the time), Benjamin Jordan (94 years) Grandville Clarke (93 years), James Cornnell (94 years), and Arnold Small (95 years). In creating the film, Roman Foster was the first to document and recognize and acknowledge these men for their valiant contributions and made it possible for all to recognize them. The film was spotlighted and aired on PBS in October 1984. For information on how to obtain a copy of this important documentary film you may contact Dr. Foster at: |
